Sour on Sweeteners?
Recent research hints artificial sweeteners aren't so sweet. In a Purdue University study, scientists found that rats fed yogurt mixed with saccharin gained five percent more fat than those given sugar-: sweetened yogurt. "No-calorie sweeteners may teach us that sweet foods aren't caloric—then when we encounter a food with real sugar, we think it has no calories and overeat," explains study co-author Susan Swithers, Ph.D.
FRENCH TWIST
Why don't French women get as wide as American ones? Because American women depend on external signs like whether a plate is clean to stop eating, while their baguette-eating counterparts rely on internal hunger cues, report Cornell University researchers.
